Ukrainian President Zelenskiy has warned that Russia might be planning to detonate the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest, according to intelligence from Ukraine. After seizing the facility last year, Moscow has allegedly converted it into a military base, using it as a launch site for attacks on Ukrainian towns across the Dnipro reservoir.

Further claims suggest Russian troops are reducing their presence at the power plant, with staff being directed to relocate to Crimea. The intelligence agency GUR has reported that Moscow has approved a plan to explode the station, with four out of six power units and a cooling pond allegedly mined.

In response, Russia's UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, denied any intention to destroy the nuclear plant in a letter to the UN Security Council and Secretary General António Guterres. Meanwhile, the US army general, Mark Milley, forecasted a protracted and bloody counteroffensive by Ukraine. The US is considering approving the delivery of controversial cluster munition warheads to aid Ukraine's efforts.

These weapons, banned by a treaty signed by over 100 countries, release multiple smaller bombs over a broad area, potentially posing risks to civilians. In a separate development, the CIA director, William Burns, secretly visited Ukraine to discuss strategies for regaining control over Russian-occupied territories and potentially initiating peace talks with Moscow.

In a landmark decision, the US Supreme Court has ruled that affirmative action, which allows race to be considered in university admissions, is unconstitutional, thereby forcing educational institutions to reevaluate methods for achieving student diversity.

This follows precedents set by past cases involving admissions plans at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, which the court deemed to be in violation of the Constitution and laws governing federally funded universities.

This ruling drew strong reactions from across the spectrum, with President Biden expressing vehement disagreement and urging colleges to pursue alternative pathways to diversity, while justices of colour shared pointed views on the implications of the decision for racial representation in America.

The fallout from the judgment will impact universities nationwide, with many already pledging to uphold commitments to diversity within the bounds of the new legal framework.
