➡️ NRDS stands for:
Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome

It's a condition in infants that occurs when the lungs are not fully developed and is common in premature infants. You may also hear it referred to as Hyaline Membrane Disease or Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome. In general, these terms can be used interchangeably.

➡️ Signs and Symptoms:
An infant with Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome may show the following signs or symptoms:
▪ Grunting
▪ Retractions
▪ Rapid, shallow breathing
▪ Nasal flaring
▪ Apnea
▪ Tachycardia

➡️ What is NRDS Associated With?
This condition is usually associated with decreased surfactant production at birth which results in severe hypoxemia. Surfactant is an important substance in the lungs that helps them expand and contract. It also functions to keep the alveoli open so that gas exchange can occur. So, with that said, if a newborn doesn't have enough, surface replacement therapy would be indicated as a treatment method for this condition.

➡️ Other Treatment Methods:
Oxygen therapy would be indicated as well in order to treat hypoxemia. And, in severe cases, intubation and mechanical ventilation may be indicated.
