➡️ Ambulation Overview
In general, extended bed rest can lead to numerous medical problems which is why ambulation is so important in order to help the body function normally. Too much bed rest often leads to painful bed sores, but it can also cause atelectasis as well due to taking in low lung volumes for an extended period of time. This is why ambulation should be started as soon as the patient is physically and mentally able.

➡️ Need for Ambulation
Studies found that early ambulation contributes to a reduction in the length of hospital stays. It also decreases the amount of 30-day readmissions as well. Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and other medical professionals may be involved in this process. Not to mention, Respiratory Therapists are often involved as well. Especially with patients who are receiving supplemental oxygen, and those who are on the mechanical ventilator. Research shows that the early ambulation of patients who are on mechanical ventilation spend less time on the ventilator than they would have without it.

➡️ Process of Ambulation
The process of ambulation involves helping the patient get out of bed, standing, and walking from one place to another. It's important to monitor the patient closely throughout this process and keep an eye on their level of consciousness, color, breathing activity, and vital signs. The patient can wear a portable pulse oximeter so that you can monitor their heart rate and oxygen saturation levels. Ambulation should be a gradual process, starting with a shorter time or distance and increasing the amount over time. Of course, each session should be documented in the patient's medical record for future reference.
