Apneustic Breathing is a sign of damage to the apneustic center in the brain. This abnormal breathing pattern is characterized by gasping and deep inhalations with a pause at full inspiration followed by quick, partial expirations. So, with this pattern, the patient will have a long inspiration followed by a brief expiration.

➡️ Apneustic Breathing Causes
Apneustic breathing is typically caused by a basilar artery occlusion as seen with a stoke. However, it can also occur in some cases of brain trauma and is sometimes seen with a hypoglycemic coma or with profound hypoxemia. When there is a lack of input from the vagus nerve and pneumotaxic center in the brain, this is when the apneustic breathing pattern can occur. This pattern is generally a sign that a patient is in critical condition with a poor prognosis. As a Respiratory Therapist or medical professional, apneustic breathing is one of the abnormal breathing patterns that you must be familiar with.
