I decided to wait a year for this review after "Countless" Offshore fishing trips to write my review. Ive always trusted Penn equipment and in my opinion, paired with Ande Fishing Line, its unstoppable.
Ive used spin-cast reels all my life and switched over to Conventional Reels for offshore fishing a few years ago. I chose the left-handed reel because thats how Im "muscle trained" to fight big fish with my right arm and reel with my left.
I find it strange using right-handed conventional reels since I made that transition several years ago. I still have my GT2s in left hand but use them mainly for freshwater fishing because of the low drag fighting power and line capacity.
I paired the PENN Warfare Level Wind Conventional Fishing Reel with a Penn Mariner II Heavy 6ft Single Piece Rod ($40 Bucks) and put it through its abusive paces.
I didnt need to re-grease or oil it until last night after a full year of use. This reel performed beautifully and I cant praise it any higher.
It has become my "gold standard" reel for Red Snapper Fishing here in Texas and even for pulling in large King Fish without too much fuss.
I imagine itll fare well for Tuna fishing and vertical jigging as well, but Ill have to wait until next fall/winter to test that out as my boat is being repowered in Port Aransas.
Tuna are mean fighters! Whether you buy it right or left-handed, just buy this reel. Pair it with a Penn Mariner Pole Heavy Single Piece 6ft Rod and you wont be sorry.
Choose your line of choice and be ready for big smiles and envy from everyone else around you as you fight your fish without looking like youre wiping your ass at the same time!
I bought this reel for my 11-year-old daughter who has been fishing with me since she could hold a rod and reel. We took her deep-sea fishing with us on a charter boat and it was her first big fish.
Unfortunately, the reel couldnt handle it and the drag didnt do its job. After reading the reviews, I thought this would be a good reel for her, but it turned out to be a disappointment.
