It is a well known fact that world governments are keen on hiding the truth about their internal and foreign affairs from their own citizens.
However, while powerful nations around the globe may try their hardest to hide confidential information from the public’s eyes, there are always those innovative few that have managed to blow the whistle on even the best kept government secrets.
In the mid-2000s, the infamous hacker and political activist Julian Assange would make a name for himself by doing exactly that.
By exposing highly classified data that revealed details ranging from the mundane to the disturbing that involved the American government’s activities, Assange would incur the wrath of U.S. officials, later forcing him into a life on the run from federal authorities over the following decade.
Today on Villains and Vagrants, we explore the curious tale of Julian Assange and the leaks that would change his life forever…

Julian Assange and The Founding of WikiLeaks
Julian Paul Assange was born in Townsville, Australia on July 3, 1971. As a teen, he developed a surefire talent for hacking web systems, including those at NASA and the Pentagon. In 1991, at the age of only twenty, he was charged with 31 counts of “cybercrime” and subsequently given a meager fine after his sentencing.
Assange would continue developing his skill with computers over the following decade. As a young adult he found work as a computer security consultant, and in his spare time he began the development of a website dedicated to leaking hacked data. In 2006, Assange unveiled his magnum opus, WikiLeaks: an online platform to collect and publish confidential documents.
