Bobbie Gentry, born Roberta Lee Streeter in Chickasaw County on July 27, 1942, is an American singer and songwriter. She wrote and released a worldwide hit in the summer of 1967 with Ode to Billie Joe (a title which was adapted into French under the title Marie-Jeanne and interpreted by Joe Dassin in 1967 and by Eddy Mitchell in 1976). This song was listed as the most popular song of the year. She received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1968.
