Unsung heroes of the countryside and conservation

Gamekeepers are the guardians of the countryside. A report that studied the activities of nearly 1,000 gamekeepers identified the often unrecognised high levels of conservation that this group of skilled and knowledgeable land and wildlife managers undertake nationally. Endangered birds such as the curlew thrive in areas managed by gamekeepers.

The conservation work that gamekeepers do is under threat in England and Wales as new legislation could jeopardise shoots which employ many of them. Welsh government proposals to licence game bird releasing could devastate shooting. In England, a change to the general licences is wreaking havoc.
