In a recent podcast, I spoke to Senator Malcom Roberts about a draft Bill that could give ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) new powers to combat misinformation and disinformation (according to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts). In their information, they state ACMA are an independent regulator, but are they really? Members are appointed by the Governor-General. And the Minister may also appoint associate members. They are not voted for by the public yet could potentially decide on and appoint a third-party to determine what they believe is to be mis or disinformation. Something doesn’t seem right to me. I wonder if the influence from power brokers inside political parties is the driving force behind so many “current issues”? and who is behind pushing those agendas?
