Man recently released from Florida prison confesses to killing pregnant mother and her child in 2002

The Heflin Police Department announced on Friday that a man, who had recently completed the majority of a 20-year prison sentence in Florida, has confessed to the fatal stabbings of a pregnant woman and her son in 2002.

Authorities took Lewis Ladon Spivey, 39, into custody after obtaining warrants for two murder charges on June 26. Spivey was subsequently transported to the Cleburne County jail in Alabama.

The police described the investigation as extensive, involving multiple agencies over the course of two decades, CBS News has reported.

Spivey had been released early from a Florida prison, where he had been serving a sentence of 15 years for robbery with a gun or deadly weapon and five years for aggravated assault related to offenses committed in 2009, according to records from the Florida Department of Corrections.
