The officer was on patrol when he saw smoke coming from the top floor of a townhouse in Pembrook Village Drive in Mount Vernon around 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, the department said on social media.

The officer knocked on the door with no answer. As the officer was warning homes nearby, a neighbor told the officer there were pets inside the burning townhouse.

"Without hesitation, the officer made entry into the home and was able to rescue the pets," police said.

Bodycam footage shows the officer letting dogs out of crates in the home.

Police did not immediately return Daily Voice's request for information, including the name of the officer.

The officer was overwhelmed by smoke on the top floor and had to leave. The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department arrived on scene and put out the fire.

"Thankfully, the officer and the dogs were uninjured," police said.
