Given the 10 million films that premiere at the Sundance Film Festival every year—give or take :D— you’ll be forgiven if you didn’t quite remember “Scrapper.” Premiering in the World Cinema Drama section—where it won that top prize—by all accounts, the film, directed by Charlotte Regan and starring up-and-comer Harris Dickinson (“Beach Rats,” “Triangle of Sadness”), is just as its title suggests: scrappy, endearing and charming.

The film stars Dickinson, also known for FX’s “Trust” by director Danny Boyle, as a young father reunited with his estranged young daughter, played by newcomer Lola Campbell. Kino Lorber picked up the film after Sundance and plans to open it in theaters nationwide on August 25, starting in NYC at the IFC Center. Dickinson is one to keep an eye on too. Having recently starred in “The King’s Man” franchise spin-off, while that movie didn’t entirely take off, the handsome, tall, and sinewy 27-year-old actor is definitely being prepped for stardom by Hollywood’s powers that be. Don’t be surprised if a superhero movie or a big franchise is in the cards for him.

Our review of “Scrapper” from Sundance reads, “[The indie] dives into the carefully constructed composure of a child who just lost her mother and has to deal with that new reality. At the same time, Jason (Harris Dickinson), her long-lost father, disrupts all of that. And it does a lovely job of doing so from her imaginative, yet not always idealistic, point of view.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

This vibrant and inventive father-daughter comedy follows Georgie (Lola Campbell), a resourceful 12-year-old girl who secretly lives alone in her flat in a working-class suburb of London following the death of her mother. She makes money stealing bikes with her best friend Ali (Alin Uzun) and keeps the social workers off her back by pretending to live with an uncle. Out of nowhere, her estranged father, Jason (Harris Dickinson; Triangle of Sadness, Beach Rats), arrives and forces her to confront reality. Uninterested in this sudden new parental figure, Georgie is stubbornly resistant to his efforts. As they adjust to their new circumstances, Georgie and Jason find that they both still have a lot of growing up to do. Winner of a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Scrapper is full of spirit, humor, and formal inventiveness that sets it apart from much of British working-class cinema. Dickinson and remarkable newcomer Campbell imbue irresistible charm into this moving and frequently the hilarious story of two emotionally tangled people: a grieving kid thrust into adulthood and a father in over his head.
