BEFORE becoming one of the most contentious and hard-nosed rappers on the entire planet, the hip-hop star we know as Troy Ave was born Roland Collins III on November 23rd, 1987 in Brooklyn, New York. And please... don’t believe him if he tries to convince you any differently. Living on the border of Queens and Bed-Stuy, Troy was raised in a part of Brooklyn known as Crown Heights. In fact, he’d take his eventual rap moniker from the cross street he grew up on, Troy Avenue. In that neighborhood, his family lived in the first floor of an apartment building and his childhood was full of football, basketball, and video games. Troy’s family might not have lived in the lap of luxury, but don’t tell them that – because even when Troy was as young as five or six, his mom, who worked as a service technician, would take him to Constantine Furs on 29th Street to hook her baby-boy up with his very own mink. Years later, he’d return the favor by buying her fur of her very own well making sure to keep himself styling and profiling as well. His mom might have helped him learn how to dress for success, but it was his grandfather who taught Troy his most important lesson – namely that no man is smarter than the next and it’s the person who works hardest that achieves the ultimate success. So, as he hopped from one high school to the next -- including stops at Shore, Wingate, and finally, New Utrecht -- Troy applied himself to his favorite class, History, while also working part-time at franchises like Verizon and Wendy’s. None of those gigs were earning him the kind of dough he was hoping for though.
