A short and convoluted history of the M1 Garand

No less than George Patton, a tank commander, referred to it as "the greatest battle implement ever devised". Designed by a French-Canadian by birth, it was the first semi-automatic battle rifle to be intended as a universal firearm for all infantry and it may be the most iconic weapon of the Second World War. This the short and convoluted history of the "U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1", or as popularly known, the M1 Garand.
