Growing pains are muscle pains that some kids feel in both legs from their bones growing faster than the muscles can adjust. They’re usually felt in the front of the thighs, in the calves and behind the knees. The pain can be described as a dull ache, or severe throbbing pain. The pain tends to come and go, and kids may have them for months or even years! They usually happen in the afternoons or evenings and can cause your child to wake up throughout the night due to pain. The pains can start around 3-4 years of age but can also affect kids ages 8-12.

Most common in pre-schoolers and adolescents, the exact origins of these aches still hasn't been pinpointed, but researchers did find that massaging and simple stretching can help prevent them and alleviate pain while they're happening
