Butler Shaffer's article, "Do You Own Yourself?," argues that most social problems are caused by a failure to respect the inviolability of each other's property interests. The question of whether one owns themselves is essential in understanding issues such as abortion and victimless crimes.

Property provides a means for maximizing both individual liberty and peace in society.

Political systems are founded upon a disrespect for privately owned property and claim rightful authority to violate property owners' wills. Political systems cannot bring about harmonious and life-sustaining ways of living together because they reject the principle of self-ownership.

Property is an existential fact, and decisions about how it will be controlled can either be made by individual property owners or the state, the latter claiming ownership over our lives. Most Americans refuse to insist upon self-ownership and give the state authority to direct their lives and property.

One can restore themselves to a state of self-ownership by asserting their claim and taking full control and responsibility for their life.
