The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (ゼルダの伝説 ブレス オブ ザ ワイルド Zeruda no Densetsu: Buresu obu za Wairudo?) is an action-adventure video game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development and published by Nintendo. It is the nineteenth title in The Legend of Zelda series and was released worldwide for Wii U and Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017. The story follows Link, who wakes up in a devastated Hyrule after a hundred years of sleep and must recover his memories and defeat the evil caused by Calamity Ganon. The gameplay is set in an open world and players can freely explore it, completing different types of missions and solving puzzles to obtain rewards.

Development of Breath of the Wild began shortly after the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and lasted five years. The team was intent on reinventing the structure of the series, so they introduced new elements such as a detailed physics engine, high-definition visuals, and voice acting. The game world was designed to reward exploration and experimentation, with the story designed to be completed in a non-linear fashion. Breath of the Wild was originally slated for release in 2015 as a Wii U exclusive, but was delayed twice due to development issues. It ended up serving as one of the launch titles for the Switch and the last game published by Nintendo for the Wii U.

Breath of the Wild was critically acclaimed upon release, being praised for the depth of its open-world gameplay and attention to detail, with several specialist publications calling it one of the best video games of all time, with the only criticism being directed towards for minor technical issues at the time of the premiere. Two downloadable content titled The Master Trials and The Champions' Ballad were released a few months later, adding new game modes, items, puzzles, challenges, and story elements. Breath of the Wild has won numerous awards, including many for game of the year. In addition, it was a great commercial success, with more than twenty million copies sold worldwide.
