FORD MUSTANG MACH-E PREMIUM 2023
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E combines performance and hatchback utility in a well-priced package. For Mustang gurus not ready to adopt an electric “Pony,” in particular one that is sold as a crossover ute, understand that at the highest GT Performance trim level the Mach E offers great handling and supercar acceleration. Styling is crisp and aerodynamic, and carries iconic Mustang styling traits like the repeater vertical bar tail lights. The Mach-E is available in Select, Premium, California Route 1 and GT trims. No matter the model selected, the Mach-E offers good range, performance, handling and now has more safety gear for 2023.
Now in its third year of production, the hot-selling five-passenger Mustang Mach-E crossover ute continues to be a star in Ford’s push towards a full lineup of electric trucks and utility vehicles. The Mach-E is targeted to consumers who want a balance between utility, performance and style, to which the Mach-E delivers. The only thing slowing the electric pony down is Ford, like other manufacturers, simply can’t meet demand for the Mach-E (or its popular F-150 Lightning electric pickup) due to continuing supply chain issues. Browse the Ford website and you’ll see order instructions with delivery dates 18 to 35 weeks out.
Other than delays, what’s new for 2023? There are a few changes, mostly for appearance package choices. Rear-wheel drive has been dropped on California Route 1 trim—now “E” all-wheel drive with a 91 kWh extended range battery is standard. Significantly, all trims (Select, Premium, California Route 1 and GT) now offer Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 advanced driver assist system.
The Mach-E aligns with the Tesla Model Y in most measures, but lacks the Tesla’s range. In terms of performance, the GT with the performance/extended range battery package catapults to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, and even lower trims can hang with the Model Y with 4.8 to 5.2 second times. The Genesis GV60 SUV is also in the 4.8 to 5.2 second range, and other competitors like the full electric Volvo XC40 Recharge and Jaguar I-Pace also offer comparable lower trim sporty performance.
Space and comfort abound in the Mach-E. Even with its compact SUV footprint, there’s plenty of room in both rows to comfortably travel, and the rear and front trunk (“frunk”) spaces are compelling in that they fall only slightly behind the Model Y. Style-wise, the Mach-E carries similar good looks as its internal combustion muscle car sibling, while claiming its own modern electric characteristics in a bigger body. It’s distinctive and muscular looking in a segment dominated by Amoeba-shaped spaceships.
With an improved overall standard safety package, the base Select trim is a good value even with its lower range. No matter the trim, you’ll have to wait for your 2023 Mach-E as supply chain issues continue to slow dealer supply. But when your Mach-E finally arrives, you will be treated to a safe and stylish CUV that’s an absolute blast to drive. This Mach-E has earned its horseshoes.
