This video articulates the gist of the following: Vitamin K is a group of fat-soluble vitamins that play a crucial role in blood clotting, bone health, and certain metabolic pathways in the body. It is named after the German word "koagulation," as it was initially discovered for its role in blood clotting. There are two main forms of vitamin K: vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K2 (menaquinone). Vitamin K1 is primarily found in green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, and broccoli. It is also synthesized by plants and is the most common dietary form of vitamin K. On the other hand, vitamin K2 is produced by bacteria in the gut and can also be found in certain animal products and fermented foods. The primary function of vitamin K is to activate proteins involved in the clotting of blood. When a blood vessel is injured, these proteins work together to form a blood clot, which helps to stop bleeding. Additionally, vitamin K is essential for the activation of proteins involved in bone mineralization, helping to maintain bone health and prevent osteoporosis. Vitamin K deficiency is relatively rare but can occur in individuals with certain health conditions or those taking medications that interfere with its absorption. Severe deficiency can lead to increased bleeding and impaired blood clotting. Newborn infants are particularly susceptible to vitamin K deficiency, and it is standard practice to administer a vitamin K injection at birth to prevent bleeding disorders. Overall, vitamin K is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in blood clotting and bone health. Maintaining a balanced diet that includes foods rich in vitamin K can help ensure an adequate intake of this important vitamin. Vitamin K exists in two primary forms: K1, derived from plants such as leafy greens (e.g., broccoli, spinach), and K2, naturally produced in the intestines. Vitamin K2 further comprises various subtypes, with MK-4 and MK-7 being the most significant ones. Clinical trials have shown that Vitamin K2 has more notable benefits for bone and heart health compared to K1. Vitamin K plays a vital role in the blood clotting process. When a blood vessel is injured, vitamin K is necessary for the activation of proteins involved in forming blood clots. These proteins work together to stop bleeding by promoting the conversion of fibrinogen (a soluble protein) into fibrin (insoluble protein strands), which form a mesh-like structure that traps blood cells and platelets, leading to clot formation. Vitamin K is also involved in maintaining bone health. It helps activate proteins that are responsible for regulating calcium metabolism in the body. Vitamin K ensures that calcium is utilized properly, directing it towards the bones and teeth while preventing its excessive accumulation in soft tissues or blood vessels. This process helps in maintaining strong, healthy bones and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.
