What to Know About the Titan Submersible

Officials believe the vessel that set out to reach the Titanic shipwreck with five passengers suffered a “catastrophic implosion,” a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.
A submersible watercraft carrying five people has gone missing while attempting to explore the Titanic shipwreck in the North Atlantic. According to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson, it is believed that the watercraft experienced a "catastrophic implosion," resulting in no survivors. The U.S. Navy detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the vicinity of the vessel when communication was lost. Although the identification of the anomaly was not definitive, it was shared with the ongoing search effort. Despite the grim assessment, authorities have decided to continue the search in hopes of finding any survivors. The submersible, named the Titan, was a 22-foot carbon-fiber and titanium craft deployed by the Canadian expedition ship, the Polar Prince. It was intended to reach a depth of nearly 13,000 feet at the Titanic shipwreck site, located on the ocean floor off Newfoundland.
