Don McLean, born October 2, 1945 in New Rochelle, New York, is an American singer-songwriter. He is best known for writing the ballad American Pie (1971).

He is also the author and performer, in 1971, of Vincent, a song dedicated to the post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. "Starry, starry night", the first lyrics of the song, are a reference to the painting The Starry Night.
