Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, a private military company, has called for a mutiny against Russia’s Defense Ministry, claiming it ordered a rocket strike that killed his men. Prigozhin's accusations and call to action have put Russian security forces on high alert and led to criminal charges being leveled against him for attempting to incite an armed rebellion. This charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment. The move has also provoked tension and potential instability within Russian military operations in Ukraine, where there have been reported infighting between Russian soldiers and Wagner mercenaries. Amidst this internal chaos, Ukrainian forces have retaken eight villages from Russian control in their first counteroffensive.

US Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal have introduced a resolution suggesting that any actions by Russia, Belarus, or their proxies that result in radioactive contamination of NATO territory should be considered an attack on the alliance. This resolution was prompted by Russia's placement of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus and the uncertain situation at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), currently under the control of Russian forces. The senators argue that any use of tactical nuclear weapons or destruction of nuclear facilities that causes radioactive contamination of NATO member countries should invoke Article 5, which regards an attack on one member as an attack on all. The senators aim to send a clear message to Putin's military that any such action would invite a massive response from NATO.
