The Killing Fields is the fourth episode of Survivor: The Australian Outback.
Challenge: Mastermind
Winner: Kucha

Day 11
The Reward Challenge, a jigsaw puzzle, promises three chickens and a rooster for the winning tribe. The Ogakors argue with each other and cannot seem to get much done, while Kucha works together more smoothly and wins the reward. Most of the Kucha tribe is glad to have the chickens, but Kimmi Kappenberg, a vegetarian, is repulsed. Michael Skupin, too, is worried because his food-catching skills are no longer as important with the chickens around, making him less valuable to the tribe.

Meanwhile, a mini-forest fire has broken out near Ogakor's camp, worrying the tribe. Fortunately, the fire cannot cross the river, so the camp remains safe. Tina talks to Colby about Jerri. She calls Jerri "the most bossy, domineering person I've ever met." Colby agrees with Tina's concerns. He does not like Jerri's decision to boot Keith next, because he feels the tribe needs Keith. Tina says that she and Keith may be able to strike an alliance with Colby. Jerri chats with Amber and Mitchell. She is a little worried that Colby might jump ship on their alliance, but that she will make sure it does not happen. Later, she makes sure that Colby is still tight with her. "It's not like you're making a deal with the devil here," she reassures him.

At Kucha, the tribe agrees to eat their first chicken. Kimmi makes it a point to leave camp before the killing. The rest of the tribe chows down on the chicken. Michael, though, is still determined to make himself useful. Suddenly he sees a pig race past camp, and he is quickly on the hunt. Michael traps the pig and kills it with the spear. Michael feels victorious. The rest of the tribe is impressed with Michael's hunting skills, but a little grossed out at the bloody scene. Kimmi, in particular, is disgusted. Later, the tribe, sans Kimmi, happily feasts on the pig.

Production
Filming was known to have commenced during the Survivor: Borneo reunion show which was hosted by Bryant Gumbel. Gumbel had Jeff Probst via phone patch where Probst revealed that they started filming. Filming took place at Goshen Station in northern Queensland between late October and early December 2000, and aired from January 28 to May 3, 2001, on CBS. The location used was within a three-hour drive off the coastal city of Cairns and located in a wet, tropical area.

In the middle of filming, Colby Donaldson, who won a trip to the Great Barrier Reef as part of a reward win, broke off coral which he intended to keep as a souvenir. During the same trip, a production helicopter flew over restricted sea rookeries. Both of these events led to the show being fined $100,000 Australian dollars. Executive Producer Mark Burnett apologized on behalf of Colby and the production staff after the episode aired.[2]

The season was released in DVD format on April 26, 2005.

Twists/Changes
Longer Game: The game lasted 42 days, three days longer than the previous season.
Tribe Composition: The sixteen castaways were divided into two tribes of eight.
Merge: The merged tribe was composed of ten members.
Final Tribal Council: Two finalists faced a jury of seven. The jurors individually addressed the finalists.
Tiebreaker: In an event of a tie vote, a revote would take place. If a deadlock occurs, the votes cast against the players in question from previous Tribal Councils will be taken into account. The castaway that had more votes would be eliminated from the game.

Season Summary
The sixteen castaways were divided into two tribes, Kucha and Ogakor. While Ogakor began the game strong by winning the first Immunity and Reward Challenges, Kucha quickly rebounded and won the next Immunity Challenge, reducing Ogakor to five members. Ogakor broke their losing streak by winning the Day 15 Immunity Challenge...
