The Killing Fields is the fourth episode of Survivor: The Australian Outback.

Day 12
For the Immunity Challenge, the castaways are quizzed one by one on facts about Australia. The tribe with the most correct answers wins. Kucha's Alicia Calaway, after missing her first three questions, finally beats Mitchell in the tiebreaker round. Therefore, Kucha wins their third straight Immunity Challenge. A demoralized Ogakor will go back to Tribal Council. Amber, Jerri, and Mitchell think that it is a foregone conclusion that Keith will be going home. But a Tribal Council shocker throws them for a loop. The three of them vote for Keith, only to find that Colby, Keith, and Tina have teamed up to vote for Mitchell, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Everyone but Keith and Mitchell vote again, but the result is another tie.

Host Jeff Probst announces the deadlock tiebreaker rule: whoever has the most votes from previous Tribal Councils will be booted. Keith has zero votes. Mitchell has one (from Keith at the previous Tribal Council). That vote makes all the difference, and a stunned Mitchell has his torch snuffed.

VOTED OUT:
Mitchell Olson

First Vote
Keith and Colby's confessionals are only available on DVD.

COLBY
“ (voting for Mitchell) Mitchell, man, you know this is nothing personal, but I'm here to win, and this is what I think's the best way to do that. ”

MITCHELL
“ (voting for Keith) Keith, you add some tension to the group at times, and my hope is that by eliminating you, we eliminate a little bit of that friction. ”

KEITH
“ (voting for Mitchell) You're the best, man. I'm so proud to have, uh, had you on this team. And when I get to New York, I'm buying the champagne for dinner, buddy. ”

TINA
“ (voting for Mitchell) This was not my original intended vote. However, on the way here to Tribal Council, a new scheme was developed. So, in the spirit of the Olympics, let the games begin. ”

Revote
Colby did not give a confessional when he voted.

JERRI
“ (voting for Keith) Mitchell, I promised you from the very beginning of this game that I would not vote for you, and I am staying true to that promise. ”

TINA
“ (voting for Mitchell) This game isn't easy. I didn't come out here to starve myself and to face the elements to keep the weakest person. I'm sorry, Mitchell. ”
Final Words

MITCHELL
“ That definitely took me by surprise. But I guess the bright side is, I get to eat, and I need to eat. Look at me... cripes. I feel a little bit betrayed by some of them, but at the same time, I want to shake their hands and congratulate them for pulling the wool over my eyes because they definitely got me. ”

Trivia
This is the first time that a tie took place during the pre-merge phase of the game.
This also marked the first deadlocked tie in the history of the show and also the first time that previous Tribal Council votes were counted at another Tribal Council.

Season Summary
The sixteen castaways were divided into two tribes, Kucha and Ogakor. While Ogakor began the game strong by winning the first Immunity and Reward Challenges, Kucha quickly rebounded and won the next Immunity Challenge, reducing Ogakor to five members. Ogakor broke their losing streak by winning the Day 15 Immunity Challenge, sending Kucha back to Tribal Council; after a medical evacuation, Kucha lost their third member, merging the two tribes with five members each. The ten remaining survivors called themselves the Barramundi tribe.

The 5-5 stalemate caused the tribes to be deadlocked the first time they went to Tribal Council, but Jeff from Kucha had past votes, bounding the former Kuchas to extinction. Three of the five former Ogakors, Colby, Keith and Tina, became the deciding factor in most of the votes, even eliminating two of their own when they could afford to before finishing off the remaining Kuchas to make themselves the final three castaways. Colby, who had dominated in the challenges and was known for his chivalry, chose the mother figure Tina over the unpopular Keith, sending the latter to the jury.
