Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!

It can be tempting to always feel we MUST fill the whole page with colour. Other times we manage to leave a little white space, but feel that of course, of point of interest MUST have colour.

Well, I'm going to suggest that this isn't true, on both counts!

This is a sketch of Heceta Head lighthouse, a beautiful lighthouse in Greece. One of my lighthouse collection (https://www.urbansketch.co.uk/store/set-of-5-lighthouse-cards) - check it out on my website if you'd like :)

And how did I paint the lighthouse, well, I didn't really.

Yes there is a red roof, and a couple of very light shadows - but really - the whole thing is pretty much just white paper.

And why does this work?

Simple, it because the contrast, tone and colours around the lighthouse push it forward and make it pop - and that's all we really need to achieve to make our focal point interesting, have it pop and shine!

This is a fully narrated tutorial of a sketch that took me a couple of hours, but with the magic of technology I can show you and talk you through the whole process in just 15 minutes. I'll discuss my reasons for making certain decisions, and talk you through all the colours I use, and why I manipulate/change the image quite a bit from the reference photo I'm using.

The colours are:
Sky - pthalo blue and cobal blue
Greenery - quin gold, pthalo blue
Shadows - paynes grey
Rocks - lunar earth, quin gold
Roofs - scarlet lake
