Not everyone will be happy (The prodigal son Luke 15:11-32)
Have you run into someone who could never just be happy for someone else? I mean they are the type of person who loves to rain on everyone else’s parade, no matter what the accomplishment, accolade, or celebration they will find some way to bring everyone down. They know exactly what to say to kill the mood and take the attention away from who should be receiving it as they simple do what comes natural to them complaining, sulking, and reminding everyone of the past. This is way I see the brother who stayed with the father while the prodigal son wandered off to live it up. When he was told that his brother had returned, and everyone was celebrating his return all this guy could do was simply start to complain. It made him angry that they were celebrating someone who had abandoned the family for selfish reasons, and it made him jealous that his brother was getting something that he thought he had earned and deserved. When he got a chance to speak to the father, he made sure the father knew that he was the hard working, loyal son, who had always done what the father had asked of him. Why are you honoring the rebellious child and ignoring the obedient child?
When we give our lives to God, we must realize that everyone is not going to be happy and rejoicing with us. There is going to be some people who are bitter, angry, and somewhat jealous of what is going on in our life and on some occasions, it will be the people who are closest to us that are the most discouraging. They will remind you every chance they can about your past failures, how you are not worthy of what you are receiving, and that it is only a matter of time before you screw up. The key to overcoming individuals like this in your life is that we must not focus on what they think of us and only focus on what the father thinks of this. There are always people like this in your life, they cannot stand to see you happy, and they want you to be just as miserable as they are. If we focus on what they say about us and the way they treat us then we are doomed to failure but if we focus on the love and attention that the father wants to shower us with then our future is bright. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Everyone around us may seem to turn on us or abandon us but God will always be on our side.
