The Ka-52 Alligator Decimates Ukraine's Offensive | Unveiling the Secrets of Russian Attack Choppers
Amid Ukraine's counteroffensive, the Ka-52 Alligator takes the spotlight as a formidable force. Russia has intensified the deployment of these attack choppers, causing significant damage to NATO armor, including German-made Leopard tanks and U.S.-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The Ka-52 has become a versatile weapon, capable of tracking and destroying everything from vehicles to enemy strongholds, making it the backbone of Russian rotary frontline aviation.
Origins of the Ka-52 Alligator can be traced back to the Soviet era. In the 1970s, the Kamov Design Bureau began developing its older cousin, the Ka-50 Black Shark. Despite the collapse of the USSR by the time the Ka-50 entered service in the mid-1990s, Kamov engineers continued to modernize the helicopter, leading to the creation of the Ka-52. Production of the Ka-52 commenced in 2008, and it officially entered Russian military operations in 2011.
One standout feature of the Ka-52 is its coaxial rotor arrangement, which allows for greater efficiency, unmatched rate of climb, and exceptional maneuverability. Armed with a side-mounted 2A42 30mm cannon, the Ka-52 can also be equipped with 9M120 Ataka laser-guided missiles with thermobaric warheads, IGLA-V air-to-air missiles, and the Hermes-A multipurpose missile system with a range of up to 100 km. Additionally, it has the capability to carry aerial bombs or unguided 240mm S-24 air-to-ground rockets.
Evading enemy anti-aircraft defenses is a crucial aspect of the Ka-52's mission. Its exhaust diffusers and flare dispensers aid in deceiving incoming missiles, while the onboard Vitebsk-25 electronic warfare suite reportedly has the ability to jam threats in the 4-18 GHz range across 120 degrees azimuth and 60 degrees elevation.
