Shazam! Fury of the Gods | 2023 Movies RANKED - Episode 11

Shazam! Fury of the Gods does what good sequels do best: take the premise of the first film and crank up the stakes. In this case, instead of some guy looking to steal Billy Batson’s powers like in the first film, this time it’s the daughters of Atlas looking to TAKE BACK THE STOLEN POWERS OF THE GODS from Billy and his super-siblings. Same thing, but bigger.

Sometimes with sequels like this the spectacle overtakes the plot in a way that diminishes the core of the story, which is of course Billy still struggling with his place in the world, both as an orphan with a new step-family, and as a super hero with the heart and mind of a child.

This sequel rides that balance well, the difficult task of giving us the exact same thing, but not so similar that it comes across as lazy, but not so off the mark that it fails to deliver what we can now say a Shazam movie is: an action filled comedy about school-life, family-life, and a legitimately hilarious take on what might happen if a group of disparate orphans were given superpowers.

I say all of this knowing full well what this is: not a graphic novel film, but the quintessential “comic book” movie, where ridiculousness is welcomed, including the most shamelessly hilarious candy product placement since E.T. ate Reese’s Pieces.
