Date – Wednesday, June 14th - 2023 – St. Basil the Great

St. Basil the Great, a venerable Bishop and renowned Doctor of the Church, left a profound mark on history. His greatness was affirmed through a vision granted to a hermit named Ephrem, who witnessed a column of fire ascending to the heavens, symbolizing Basil's extraordinary holiness. Initially skeptical, Ephrem's doubts were dispelled when he saw a tongue of flame emanating from Basil's mouth as they conversed. This miraculous sign confirmed Basil's sanctity, and Ephrem exclaimed, "Truly Basil is great, truly Basil is a column of fire, truly the Holy Spirit speaks through his mouth!"

Another hermit, observing Basil in his grand episcopal attire, harbored disdain, presuming that the Bishop derived pleasure from such pomp. However, a voice spoke to the hermit, revealing that Basil found less delight in his dignified apparel than the hermit did in stroking his own cat. This gentle rebuke highlighted the hermit's attachment to small comforts and affirmed that one's soul is saved by following the path God has chosen for them, whether in solitude or amidst riches.

St. Basil's unwavering commitment to truth and justice led him to confront Emperor Valens, who favored the Arian heresy and unjustly confiscated a Catholic church. Fearlessly, Basil stood before the Emperor, reminding him that a king's honor loves judgment and justice. Valens, frustrated, retorted, "This is unworthy of you!" Basil fearlessly replied, "What is worthy of me is to die, if I must, for justice!" His resolute defense of truth demonstrated his unwavering dedication to God's principles.

To resolve the dispute over the confiscated church, Basil proposed a divine judgment. The doors would be sealed, and both Catholics and Arians would pray for their rightful claim. If God opened the doors in response to their supplications, the true owners would be revealed. Despite the Arians' fervent prayers for three days and nights, the doors remained closed. In contrast, as Basil led a majestic procession to the church, he struck the doors gently with his pastoral crook, and they swung open effortlessly. The people, rejoicing and grateful to God, witnessed the church's return to the Catholics.

Although these accounts may contain elements of legend, they convey profound spiritual truths. They underscore the delicate balance between poverty and riches within the Church, teaching that both paths can lead to sanctity. St. Basil's unwavering courage in confronting both heresy and secular authority inspires us to defend truth and justice in our own lives. These stories invite us to marvel at the divine order of things and cultivate a spirit of admiration for the heavenly realities that await us.

St. Basil the Great, pray for us.
