APD officers arrest shooting suspect when responding to a shooting call

On June 11, 2023, Atlanta police responded to a person’s shot call in the area of Custer Ave SE and Funston Ave SE. Responding officers arrived on scene, but initially did not locate a gunshot victim. They continued to canvas the area and responded back to the scene, where they encountered a male near the incident location. Officers observed the male with his hand and a firearm tucked in his waistband.

Officers gave the male verbal commands to show his hands, however, he refused to comply. Additional officers responded to the scene to assist on the call, where they continued to give the male verbal commands to get on the ground. Officers deployed their tasers at the male, however, it was ineffective. At that time, an officer tackled the male, where officers safely recovered the firearm from the male’s waistband and took the male into custody with no apparent injuries.

The male was identified as 22-year-old Markevious Samuel. Officers were able to locate a gunshot victim at the location who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Mr. Samuel was subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Possession of a Firearm or Knife during the Commission of or Attempt to Commit Certain Crimes.
