If you are a regular of the channel then you know that I constantly harp about education and training. There are so many things that could be covered, but what can we really zero in on as a real world difference maker that I have seen help REAL clients SURVIVE **or** would have kept them out of serious trouble?

Situational awareness.

In White you are unaware and unprepared and to not only take lethal action, but to even recognize a threat emerging on the horizon. If you are attacked in White you will probably die unless your adversary is totally inept. White is where you get robbed while scrolling your phone, white is where you left the front door wedged open after bringing in your groceries, white is where you took the call as you walk to your car through the dark parking lot late at night… white is where everything bad usually happens.

In Yellow you are what can be described as relaxed… but alert. You are aware of what is happening around you, but you do not see any specific threats.
Yellow is not a land of paranoia, it is a land of awareness. Yellow is where you know that there are predators in the woods who are constantly hunting for their next meal and knowledge that everyone who isn’t them is on the food chain. Yellow is training yourself on pre-threat indicators and exhibiting a heightened level of situational awareness. Yellow is walking through the woods with your eyes and ears open to the twig that snaps.

In Orange you have determined that there is a specific potential threat but before you have taken action. Orange is when your car is alone in the parking lot but someone else is on an intercept course for you and there is not good reason why. Orange is when 5 guys are standing at a street corner where the light is out and they all stand up and start looking at you silently when you come around the corner. Orange is when the hair stands up on the back of your neck and the alarm bells should be screaming out from every sense of your body that something… is seriously wrong. But orange also does not need to rise to that level. Orange is anytime there is a specific alert, issue or possible threat. You were in Yellow so that you can transition in and out or orange as you assess possible threats and either rule them out or adjust to what is happening. Orange will run “what if” scenarios and establish bright red lines of “if he does this… produce a gun, grab my daughter, start running at me…. You can skip the moment of being stunned and skip right into red.

In Red you are in a lethal mode and will shoot if circumstances warrant. Red is when one of those threats from orange crosses the red line and you need to immediately act.

The USMC uses "Condition Black," although it was not originally part of Cooper's color code. According to Massad Ayoob, "Condition Black," in Cooper's youth, meant "combat in progress." "Condition Black" is also used to mean "immobilized by panic" or "overwhelmed by fear".
