TRAIN DRIVER'S VIEW: Up and down in the foggy Flåm valley

Transition time from high season to low season on the Flåm Line. Trains are now shorter and two train service is only running part of the day.

Being the first train up in the morning can prove quite challenging when the rails are really slippery, like today. leafs falling on to the track and getting squished by the wheels makes it even more challenging.

You can put a monkey to drive a train, but it takes real finesse and craftsmanship to anticipate, adjust and being able to stay on very edge of wheelspinn while climbing the steep 55‰ (5.5%, 1:18) gradient, basically the ability to "read the rails".

The fog was laying thick in the valley and the rain was pouring down. When changing direction at Myrdal it didn't take long before I was soaked on my back.

Thank goodness for the good heating on the EL18.
