An emotional Rodri felt he 'played s***' in the first half of the Champions League final before bagging the only goal of the game after the break.

The midfielder's classy strike secured a first European tile for Pep Guardiola's side, and took them to a famous treble.

He said after the game: 'I wasn't good in first-half, was playing s***, but this talk about mentality I say to myself you have to overcome situation and in the end I score a goal. Unbelievable.'

Rodri had to persuade the manager to leave him in, as he explains: 'I said Pep you have to play me, we had to win and today we did, like Sergio, Fernandinho, Silva, all of these players that make the club big this is for them.'

Rodri then, when stood alongside Sergio Aguero, described the Argentine striker as a 'f***ing legend', forcing BT Sport to apologise.

The 26-year-old had scored just one Champions League goal before Saturday's final, but proved the difference in a tense game against Inter Milan.

Simone Inzaghi's side proved a tougher test for City than many had anticipated and forced two brilliant saves from Ederson, but may rue some wayward shooting in the second half.

Rodri continued: 'I am emotional, this is a dream come true, all these guys, around here waiting how many years, I have been here four years but they deserve it, at the end god gives you this present.

'Finals like this, we didn't expect to play well like always, emotions are there, nerves there, but we competed like animals.

'We made history, the good thing is we want more, this group has more ambition. It is a dream we have to enjoy it as this moment never happen again, we hope next year and deserve to celebrate.'

Rodri had previously appeared in the fixture with City in 2021, when they were beaten by Chelsea.

That failure will make Saturday's win even sweeter for City fans, as will their matching Man United's greatest achievement.

Manchester is now the second city in Europe, after Milan, to boast two Champions League winner, and the Red Devils, famous 1999 treble winning season has been matched.

Peter Schmeichel, who played for both clubs, said before the game he would 'hold his hands up to' City if they completed the treble, as they have' played 'the best football I have ever seen' this season.
