I recently purchased the SHIMANO SLX baitcasting reel and have been thoroughly impressed with it so far. One of the first things I noticed was how smooth the reel felt in my hands.
The rubberized handles gave it a higher quality feel compared to other reels I own. I have a couple of Corados and DC reels and the SLX is not the same as them, but for the price, the quality is definitely there.
After testing it out, I can confidently say that this is one of my new favorite reels. It is my first Shimano reel and the first reel Ive used with frictional brakes instead of magnetic brakes.
The instructions were a little unclear, but once I got the hang of it, I was able to cast it with ease. The low profile of this reel is perfect for hiking and traveling.
I have owned many baitcasting reels in the past, and the more I pay, the better the quality. However, this reel can easily cast a mile, just like my Shimano Metanium DC that cost twice as much.
The difference between the SLX and my Antares or Metanium is small, with the crank being slightly chunkier and less smooth. However, this is not a deal-breaker, especially considering the price point.
Compared to other reels within its price range, such as the $70 Silver Max or $140 Lews combo, the SHIMANO SLX blows them away. It is also 20% better than the Daiwa Fuego FGCT100.
Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with the SHIMANO SLX baitcasting reel and would easily pay $250 for it. Shimano is unbeatable when it comes to quality and this reel is no exception.
