Winchester 1897 - Pump-Action Shotgun - Short Video
The Winchester Model 1897, also known as the Winchester 97 or simply the Model 97, is a pump-action shotgun that was produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1897 to 1957. It was one of the first successful and widely adopted pump-action shotguns and became popular for its robust design and reliable operation.
Here are some key features and details about the Winchester Model 1897:
Action: The Model 1897 utilizes a pump-action mechanism, which means that the user manually operates the sliding forearm to chamber and eject rounds.
Gauge and Capacity: It was initially chambered for 12 gauge shells, but Winchester later introduced versions in 16 gauge, 20 gauge, and even .410 bore. The capacity of the tubular magazine varied depending on the barrel length and could typically hold five to six rounds.
Takedown Design: The Model 1897 was designed to be easily disassembled for transportation or storage. The barrel and magazine tube could be separated from the receiver by unscrewing a takedown screw.
Barrel Length and Chokes: The barrel length options ranged from 20 to 36 inches, with the 30-inch barrel being the most common. Some models featured a fixed choke, while others had interchangeable chokes.
Sights: The standard sights on the Model 1897 included a front bead sight and a fixed rear sight, often a simple notch or a buckhorn sight. Some models had adjustable or tang-mounted peep sights.
Design Variations: Over the years, Winchester made several design changes and introduced various models and special editions of the Model 1897. These variations included trench gun versions used by the military in World War I and World War II, as well as sporting and riot gun configurations.
The Winchester Model 1897 gained popularity for its versatility, being used for various purposes such as hunting, sport shooting, military applications, and even in the early days of trap and skeet shooting. Its robust construction and reliable action made it a favorite among many users.
