The Book of Jeremiah: Part 8- Chapters 13-14- The Sash: The Symbol of Israel- The Drought-

Jeremiah 13-

Jeremiah 13:1-10- "The Sash: A Symbol of Israel"

13:1: "A LINEN SASH" was used as a loincloth- the Prophet Jeremiah lived and simple and obedient life, he did everything the Lord commanded him to do without hesitation.

13:4: "THE EUPHRATES": the prophet Jeremiah resided in Judah, Jeremiah is commanded to go into Babylon to "HIDE" the sash, then return later to uncover it. It could be feasible that Jeremiah took such a trip before the destruction of the city, but it is more likely that God could have transported him. Whether this happened in the body or in the spirit is fair to say it's unclear.

13:3-7: tells us the importance of clinging to God. In v. 7: "BEHOLD": here seems ironic. Jeremiah knew the cloth would be "ROTTED"- just as he knew Judah would also be ruined by its pride- the rotten sash is a picture of Judah- see vv. 10-11).

Jeremiah 13:12-14- "WINE BOTTLES: A WARNING TO ISRAEL"

The prophet Jeremiah and Jesus both taught with illustrations, that's because the Word spoke through the prophets- see also Matthew 9:14-17

Jeremiah 13:15-27- "HOW LONG, O JERUSALEM"

13:17: According to the Orthodox study Bible- this passage may be alternately translated- "if you will not hear it secretly, your soul will weep for your pride." That is, if you do not read the Law and the covenants spiritually, your soul will be left barren.

13:19: Here it's suggesting that "JUDAH" was completely conquered, and provides an example of how a country would be deported from that time on.

13:26: "I WILL UNCOVER YOUR BACKSIDE TO YOUR FACE": So physically speaking, this is an impossibility- instead it's more of a spiritual warning- our backside is uncovered to our face when we become aware that our sins and faults are seen by the entire world.

Jeremiah 14-

14:1-10: This is the prophecy of a "DROUGHT" it's either referring to a period "WITHOUT RAIN (v. 4) or referring to the judgment of God (v. 10) or it could be both. Jeremy is also calling on the Lord to break off the drought.

14:13: "THEIR PROPHETS" Jeremiah identifies a group of prophets who generally told the ruling class what they wanted to hear. "THEIR PROPHETS", not ours is suggesting distance between them and the Lord- they were false prophets who sent themselves to deceive the people.

14:22: Returning to the theme of the drought, Jeremiah is identifying God with the coming of the "RAIN", which He "MADE."

Numbers 6:24-26

“The Lord bless you and keep you;

25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,

And be gracious to you;

26 The Lord [a]lift up His countenance upon you,

And give you peace.” ’
