Uthai Thani อุทัยธานี one of Thailand's seventy-six provinces and is located in the lower part of northern Thailand. It lies somewhat off the route between Bangkok, 200 km distant and Chiang Mai.

Originally Mon and Lawa settled in the area. The first Thai settlement in the area was Muang U Thai during the Sukhothai Kingdom, but it was later abandoned when the river changed course. The Patabeut people, of Karen ethnicity, revived the settlement at its current site during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It served as a fort protecting the boundary of the kingdom.

Uthai Thani is the hometown of the father of King Rama I. He later renamed the city from its old name Uthai to Uthai Thani.

The city and province still retain the rural Thailand feel. The old town and waterfront looks like something out of the past. It is off the normal tourist trail but there are still lots of things to see and do here. One of the things that are a must do is to check out the Ban Sakae Krang Old Market.

Only open on Saturday’s from 3 to 8 pm a section of the old town is transformed into a walking street night market. Vendors line the road selling local foods, snacks and products. The market is right in the middle of the local community so when you shop you can see how they live. There are many homes that open the front up to restaurants or private museums displaying things from the area.

I really enjoyed the market and will defiantly stop by again on my next visit to the area.
