• Neh. 4:4-5 Here we see how Nehemiah responds to opposition and aggression: 1)he prays 2) he continues his work 3)he encourages his co-workers 4) he takes precautions. Prayer gives empowerment to know what to do next. If we encounter resistance personally or as a community of faith – and that is what we get when we are in the Lord’s way! –, we have important clues here for our response to those attacks. Nehemiah did not go against them. He didn’t revile in return. Nor did he suggest consultation with the enemy. You do not negotiate with devils, you confront them with the much greater power of prayer and that is the language that they understand. It is good to retreat regularly during busy activities to seek God in prayer. The nature of our work does not matter. Whether we are engaged in spiritual work, work in the church, or our earthly activities, we need to involve God in everything.

• Neh. 4:6 After Nehemiah poured out his heart before God, he and the people continued to build as if there were no opposition, ignoring the devil. They did not allow themselves to be tempted to talk or complain about things. The people wanted to work because they had a heart for God. There’s no need to encourage someone who has his heart set on work for God. Jesus, our example had this attitude, see what he said in Joh 5:17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working." He is the example for every Christian. We can only selflessly dedicate ourselves to the other with a heart full of love if we look at Him. Then a workload becomes a work pleasure.

• Neh. 4:7-8 The feelings of the enemy kept pace with those of the people, but in the opposite direction. The more desire the people had to work, the more desire the enemy had to disturb the work. First, it was Sanballat, then Tobiah joined him. Now a whole group joined. The enemy formed a strong coalition that wanted to attack Jerusalem from all sides. Not only did the number of enemies increased, but also the anger that animated them. The anger of Neh_4:2 had swelled here to “very angry”. If the wall rose steadily and the breaches were closed, they would no longer have access to the city of God., that thought was unacceptable to them. The mockery and ridicule expressed did not have the desired effect, the enemy began to threaten with violence. Where he succeeds in opposing the believers against each other, he breaks the power of their testimony. At the same time he will gain access to cause even more mischief: where “jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing” (Jas_3:16). When what God says in His Word is not heeded, confusion arises and peace is gone. God is the God of peace for all local churches. That peace is our part if we submit to His will which He has revealed in His Word. Stop fighting your brother or sister and work in love towards unity and peace.
