François Asselineau [fʁɑ̃ˈswa asəliˈno]aÉcouter, born September 14, 1957 in Paris, is a senior French civil servant and politician.

He joined the Finance Inspectorate in 1985 and then pursued a career as a senior civil servant which led him to work in various ministerial offices under the right-wing governments of the 1990s and, between 2004 and 2006, the post of General Delegate for Intelligence Economics at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. At the same time, he was an executive of the RPF then of the RIF and sat on the Paris Council from 2001 to 2008, elected on the list of Jean Tiberi.

In 2007, he founded the People's Republican Union (UPR), which campaigns for the exit from the European Union, the euro zone and NATO. This party is described by many observers as sovereigntist, anti-American and conspiratorial (As usual, of course). The political nuance attributed by the Ministry of the Interior to the lists and candidates of the UPR in the elections since 2014 is "diverse", while the party presents itself as being outside the right-left divide. François Asselineau is usually located on the right, even on the extreme right. Sometimes attached to Gaullism, he assumes this label and also presents himself as an opponent of the National Front.

After failing to stand in the presidential election of 2012, he is a candidate for that of 2017 and collects 0.92% of the vote. He again fails to stand in the presidential election of 2022, for lack of sufficient sponsorships.

Il entre à l'Inspection des finances en 1985 puis mène une carrière de haut fonctionnaire qui le conduit à exercer dans différents cabinets ministériels sous les gouvernements de droite des années 1990 et, entre 2004 et 2006, le poste de délégué général à l'intelligence économique au ministère de l'Économie et des Finances. En parallèle, il est cadre du RPF puis du RIF et siège au conseil de Paris de 2001 à 2008, élu sur la liste de Jean Tiberi.

En 2007, il fonde l'Union populaire républicaine (UPR), qui milite pour la sortie de l'Union européenne, de la zone euro et de l'OTAN. Ce parti est décrit par de très nombreux observateurs comme souverainiste, antiaméricain et conspirationniste (Bien sûr, c'est classique finalement !). La nuance politique attribuée par le ministère de l'Intérieur aux listes et candidats de l'UPR aux élections depuis 2014 est « divers », tandis que le parti se présente comme étant en dehors du clivage droite-gauche. François Asselineau est quant à lui couramment situé à droite, voire à l'extrême droite. Parfois rattaché au gaullisme, il assume cette étiquette et se présente également comme un opposant au Front national.

Après avoir échoué à se présenter à l'élection présidentielle de 2012, il est candidat à celle de 2017 et recueille 0,92 % des voix. Il échoue à nouveau à se présenter à l'élection présidentielle de 2022, faute de parrainages suffisants.
