Officials and guests at the Kaduna ceremony had an opportunity to chat over refreshments . Earlier in a welcoming speech, the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bellow University, Dr. I.S. Audu, had reminded those attending of the urgency needed in treating eye diseases. He estimated there were 500,000 Nigerians suffering varying degrees of blindness, and said the unit would supplement a very efficient eye workshop which had tested eyesight and dispensed spectacles since 1968.
