On January 17, 1979, three young individuals—Carl Drew, Robin Murphy, and Andre Maltais—were involved in the murder of Karen Marsden, a sex worker involved in the local occult and prostitution scene.

Karen Marsden was found brutally beaten and strangled to death in the Freetown State Forest near Fall River. The investigation uncovered a disturbing connection between the murder and alleged satanic practices, which garnered significant media attention at the time.

During the trial, Robin Murphy, who was a self-proclaimed high priestess of a satanic cult, testified against Carl Drew and implicated him as the primary instigator of the crime. Carl Drew was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
