Ozempic is a GLP-1 Agonist that was originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a group of hormones called incretins that are produced in the bowel. Now, with its sister drug Wegovy, it is sometimes used, albeit in an off-label manner, as a weight loss medication. But can Ozempic become a new treatment for addiction? The treatment of addiction is still not as effective as we would like, so that the addition of new medications, such as members of the GLP-1 agonist class such as Ozempic, would be welcome. Multiple studies are ongoing to evaluate this class of drugs in the treatment of addiction. If these clinical studies prove that GLP-1 agonists, like Ozempic, are effective in treating addictions, this would be a major step forward in the management of addictive disorders.
