Octopath Traveler 2 (PC) - Part 92: Revenge of the Fallen (Galdera Superboss Fight)

The final preparations for the endgame are in place, which means it's now time for the fight I've been dreading since I started this walkthrough! After completing all of Al's side stories, you unlock a new area accessible by sailing to the "???" island in the Sundering Sea. Go there, and a wounded Al will give you his final quest: A Gate Between Worlds. Go up the stairs and you will be asked to divide your party into two teams of four. Where have we seen this before...?

That's right, Galdera, the True Final Boss of the first Octopath Traveler, is now an optional Superboss in this game! And he has a few nasty new tricks up his sleeve! For starters, during the first phase against the Omniscient Eye, it now has 600,000 HP and summons all three souls at once, and each soul will counterattack any attack that doesn't target its weakness (this includes attacks that reduce shields regardless of weakness like Osvald's One True Magic), making the second phase with the elemental-shifting souls especially diffiicult. It can also summon two diifferent auras that drain HP or SP every turn. The final phase where it consumes the souls now gives it 16 shields instead of 12 and gives it 4 actions per turn. Ochette and Castti will be your MVPs in this phase, with Osvald dealing additional damage and Agnea providing additional support. Two beasts you'll want to have Ochette capture for this fight are the Dreadwing and the Twisted Lizardking II. Both have full-party attacks for the souls' shared weaknesses, plus the Dreadwing has a chance to instantly kill a soul and the Lizardking can break two of the Eye's numerous shields in the final phase with one attack. Use Ochette's "Provoke Beasts" EX skill to summon 6 of them at once for maximum effect to have 6 chances to kill the souls instantly, or break 12 of the 16 shields in the final phase. Ochette can also deal plenty of damage with Brand's Thunder after breaking the Eye, and Osvald can pile it on with the One True Magic (used with Latent Power when possible). Agnea and Ochette can also weaken its defenses with Critical Scope and Beastly Howl respectively. Castti's one job in this phase is a BP Battery with her concoctions.

The second phase has also been buffed, with Galdera now having 250,000 HP instead of 180,000, and all of its body parts also have over 100,000 HP apiece as well. Partitio's Hired Help is your best friend in this fight. The Beastlings can quickly break the appendages and the Foreign Assassins deal a lot of damage and heal you as well, and Temenos's Latent Power can help as well. Throne's Aeber's Reckoning and Hikari's Shinjumonjigiri are your main damage dealers. Once all the appendages are dead, Galdera will have 20 shields that restore by 2 every turn and will get 4 actions per turn. The best way to break him is by having Temenos summon the elderly man from Clockbank with the Fatal Fang skill and have Hikari use his own. Partitio hires Foreign Assassins (another preparation from the last episode), and Throne keeps everyone energized, stepping in with Aeber's Reckoning after break.

Just when I thought Galdera from the first game was the hardest JRPG boss I've ever fought, this fight manages to one-up it even further. After the fight, I also realized I missed a couple side stories, so I clean those up afterwards. Next episode, we begin the final chapter!
