The PT-91 has its roots in the Soviet-era T-72 main battle tank. But the upgraded and more capable Twardy was actually developed by the Poles.

Shortly before the USSR fell apart, the Polish military was in the process of modernizing its equipment. But with the dissolution of the Communist giant, the nation was left with no option but to continue independently.

Using old but reliable Soviet technologies as well as experimental programs of their own, the Polish eventually came up with an improved version of a Soviet main battle tank with enhanced mobility, armor, and firepower.

Ironically, the Twardy would later be deployed to combat the remnants of the same regime it was initially designed to fight alongside…
