Piping stitching tips 1
Sure! I can provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to do piping stitching in sleeves. Piping stitching is a decorative technique that involves attaching a strip of fabric (known as piping) along the edges of a garment to create a finished look. Here's how you can do it specifically for sleeves:
Materials you'll need:
Fabric for the piping (usually a contrasting color or pattern)
Fabric for the sleeve
Piping cord
Sewing machine
Matching thread
Pins
Scissors
Iron
Step-by-step instructions:
Prepare the piping:
a. Cut bias strips from the fabric for the piping. Bias strips are cut diagonally across the fabric, which allows them to have more stretch and flexibility.
b. The width of the bias strip should be twice the desired width of the finished piping plus the seam allowance. For example, if you want a 1/2-inch piping, cut bias strips that are 1.5 inches wide.
c. Place the piping cord along the center of the bias strip, fold the fabric over the cord, and pin it in place.
d. Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine, stitch close to the cord, securing it within the fabric strip. This will create your piping.
Prepare the sleeve:
a. Take the sleeve fabric and fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides together.
b. Press the fold to create a crease, which will serve as a guide for attaching the piping evenly.
Attach the piping to the sleeve:
a. Starting at the sleeve's armpit, place the raw edges of the piping along the raw edge of the sleeve, aligning them together.
b. Pin the piping in place, following the crease line you created earlier.
c. Use the zipper foot on your sewing machine and stitch along the edge of the piping, as close to the cord as possible. Remove the pins as you sew.
Finishing the piping:
a. Once you have attached the piping along the entire sleeve edge, trim the excess fabric and cord.
b. Fold the ends of the piping strip inward and overlap them to create a neat finish. Pin them in place.
c. Sew the overlapped ends of the piping together, securing them securely.
Completing the sleeve:
a. Fold the sleeve fabric in half, right sides together, aligning the edges.
b. Pin the sleeve edges together, ensuring that the piping remains sandwiched between the layers.
c. Stitch along the sleeve edge, removing the pins as you go.
d. Press the seam open or toward one side, depending on your preference.
That's it! You have now completed the piping stitching in the sleeves. Remember to practice on scrap fabric first to get comfortable with the technique before working on your actual garment. Happy sewing!
