RACIST TEACHER ON LEAVE

A teacher at Hempstead High School in Dubuque, Iowa has been put on leave and is under investigation after he was caught on camera saying “What you looking at n*gger” to a Black student who walked by him in the hallway. The teacher appears to immediately apologize, but there’s no excuse or exception for this kind of racism. Although the school has yet to name him, the teacher has been identified by some online as 51-year-old Roger Poling, a financial literacy teacher and bowling coach with a part-time gig as a Sunday school teacher and deacon.

This is the kind of violation that does not require an investigation. They know who did it. They know what was said. They know that there is no context where it is ever okay for him to have said that. Given his immediate reaction, he will probably trot out a “I meant to say something else” defense. At the end of the day, impact is greater than intent, and it doesn’t matter what the reason was. This racist needs to face the consequences for his actions and be publicly identified and fired.
