Meet Satyendranath Tagore, the first Indian to become an IAS officer almost 160 years ago
Satyendranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore's elder brother, was the first Indian to pass the Civil Services Examination in 1864. Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian to be appointed to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). In 1862, Satyendranath Tagore traveled from India to England to study for the examination. In 1863, he was selected for the Civil Service, and after finishing his education in England, he returned to India in 1864. He was the first Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of India. After that, he was posted to the Bombay Presidency and then after a few months to the city of Ahmedabad.
