Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) has warned against passing a debt agreement without a Republican majority in the House. According to him, such a move could trigger an "immediate" effort to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Gaetz argues that allowing Democrats to pass legislation that most Republicans disagree with would violate their agreement to allow McCarthy to become Speaker. Instead, it could lead to a motion to remove him from the position.
