I recently purchased the Masterbuilt MB20091621 Lump Charcoal 16 Pound bag and I must say, I am incredibly impressed with this product. The first thing I noticed about this charcoal is that it is very reasonably priced.
With the quality of the product that you receive, you would expect to pay much more than what you actually do. When using this charcoal for grilling or smoking, I found that it provided a great flavor.
It had a slightly stronger smell than some other brands that I have used in the past, but this only added to the robustness of the flavor. One thing that I really appreciated about this charcoal was how well it responded to restricted or increased airflow.
This made it perfect for reverse searing, high heat grilling or low n slow smoking. In terms of the size of the pieces, they ranged from briquette sized to larger than a fist, with minimal chips and useless small pieces at the bottom of the bag.
This was incredibly beneficial as it made the product easier to work with when handling and using. Another great feature of this charcoal is how dense and hard it is.
I found that this only added to the longevity of the product and made it much easier to handle during shipping and handling. While it did take a bit longer to light than some other brands, this only meant that it wouldnt just burn up really fast.
It did smoke a little more than some brands upon first lighting, and sometimes sparked and popped a bit, but I didnt find this to be too much of an issue.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed with this charcoal. If the price remains at or below $1 a pound, I will definitely continue using this product. It is my favorite charcoal as it offers the best overall value, flavor and performance.
