In 1943, a 96- by 18-foot floating wooden pontoon bridge was first built in Sargent, Texas, to span the Inter Coastal Waterway, between the mainland and the island with FM457. In 1975, the old wooden bridge was replaced with a larger metal pontoon span, which cost $270,000 to install. New approaches were added in 1981, and no additions were made until the new design, the concrete Corkscrew Bridge was built. The old "swing bridge" took about 15 minutes to be manually opened for each barge to pass thru. Barges would call ahead via radio to the TxDot bridge operators, so they could open it in time. In May 2014, a barge struck the bridge on the southern end, causing it to be temporarily shut down over the Memorial Day weekend.

After multiple public hearings and subsequent weather delays, Construction for current Sargent Corkscrew Bridge finally began in August 2018 and wasn't completed until mid 2020.
